COOKING ON THE ROAD WITH SNOW PEAK GEAR

HELLO + WELCOME to an extra special feature post on some of our favourite gear.

As we drive from Sydney to London we have had a lot of questions about our cooking set-up.

It seems you want to know ‘What are you cooking?’ and ‘How are you cooking it?’

At first this question seemed a bit odd (err, we are eating FOOD…) but as the trip has progressed it has become blazingly obvious just how important a good feed and kitchen set-up is when on the road.

FOOD ON THE ROAD

Here’s a pervy break down of our typical meals on the road.

Breakfast > > Is kept simple – so we can focus on the day ahead. Muesli, banana with yoghurt or Weet-Bix with chilled milk. Just like at home we occasionaly have a moorish cooked breakfast. Think: eggs, bacon, rocket, turkish bread. And often a steaming hot cup of ground plunger coffee for G and a herbal tea for K.

Lunch > > Is a wrap, puffed corn bread topped with yummo stuff or a straight up salad. We like to keep a couple of packets of smoked salmon in the fridge and a few tins of tuna in the cupboard at any one time. Coupled with rocket, avocado, tomatoes, cucumber, alfalfa, too much aioli and goats cheese… and we are extremely happy.

We got this wrong at first, too easily wooed by a cafe lunch when near a town. We have learnt that whipping up our own lunch is far more satisfying and tastier! Plus saves us a lot of coin.

Dinner > > We cook anything that a two burner cooker and a SNOW PEAK Fire Pit can take on. Pastas. Warm lamb or chicken salads. Fried rice. Snags. Chori pans (chorizo + crusty bread + rocket). Hamburgers. Meat and a few vege (peas or carrots or  beans). Big hot curries.

DRIFTA SNOW PEAK COOKING GEAR

How are we cooking and preparing all this?  With our Drifta Snow Peak cooking gear.

It is some seriously great gear. Top quality and compact.

All the cooking gear, along with our pantry of food, fits inside our DRIFTA slide out kitchen. So when it’s time for food, sheeeerwing out slides the drawer!

Here’s a run down of all the DRIFTA SNOW PEAK gear we are using:

OUR MEDIUM SNOW PEAK COOK SET

This cook set is just like a Russian doll – it pulls apart into 2 saucepans, a strainer, 2 lids, oven mitt, handle and a fry pan. It takes up minimum space and is an absolute pocket rocket. We have been so impressed with the quality and after daily use over the past 3 months it is going strong.

OUR SNOW PEAK MUGS + COFFEE PLUNGER

These are The Only cups we travel with. Let me repeat that, these are THE ONLY cups we travel with! Titanium. Double skinned. Collapsable handles make them sit snug in our kitchen draw.

The fact they are made from titanium means a few things: They are crazy lightweight. They are pretty much indestructible (well, we think they are!). They don’t leave a metal taste in your drinks that a tin cup would. We use them for  tea, coffee, booze, water… everything we drink.

When it comes to coffee, Gareth is the drinker in our team. “It’s so light. Well constructed. It’s doesn’t feel anything like the cheap ones. It’s strong and the filter is clearly made to last” he says. Plus, “It creates a solid cup of plunger coffee, without any crappy metal taste, because it’s made from titanium”.

OUR SNOW PEAK CHOPPING BOARD

This chopping board folds in half to conceal a knife. It unfolds, flips over to form a board, lets you do your thing, and then packs away neatly. Which, we should mention fits perfectly to the length of our Drifta drawer. Luck? Nah, it’s meant to be.

ETHOS: LIKE A GREAT WRIST WATCH

Snow Peak is crafted in Japan and distributed in Australia by DRIFTA. The Japanese are notorious for creating smart, high quality gear. And boy does it ring true for this brand.

Here is a quote, I adore, that drives the ethos behind their products:

Today we strive to create products that inspire people to enjoy the outdoors, we seek harmony between people and nature, and we look to manufacturer with such high quality standards that you'll pass them on to the next generation like a great wrist watch.

Love your blog my husband and I are looking forward to more, we have just been to cape York for 5 weeks and are hoping to do more traveling around Australia. We are hoping to change our kitchen arrangement as it was far too weighty. We will look into drifter kitchens. One thing where is your gas bottle situated and do you have it connected at all times to the stove?
